Reading Programs in Yancey County Schools Summer time is calling!Summer is great fun, and I hope everyone has a wonderful time. Please, please, please, let's remember to keep up with our reading! Reading 30-45 minutes a day is a wonderful opportunity to bond together with your child, to enjoy some quiet time, and most importantly, it will help your child remain where they are in their reading skills so that when school starts, they won't have to catch up!
Have a wonderful summer break, and READ! How do you calculate fluency? We all have administered fluency assessments, determined the number of words per minute. What happens though if you would like to take a fluency reading on some other passage that doesn't have the numbers written out at the end? You really have two options in this case:
1. You can have a student read a passage for one minute and count the number of words read CORRECTLY. The number of words read correctly in this case is the same as words per minute......OR 2. You can have the student read the entire passage that is fewer or more than 100 words. The teacher records the student's time and calculates the words read correctly per minute by using the following formula: words read correctly ______________________ total reading time in minutes Take the words read correctly and divide it by the total reading time in minutes. Language! 3rd editionIn many of our exceptional children's classrooms we are providing instruction using the program Language! 3rd edition. This is an intense program designed to improve the skills of struggling readers.
